Asia Cup 2025 Controversy: Naqvi Transfers Trophy to UAE Board After BCCI Threat

Asia Cup 2025 Controversy: Naqvi Transfers Trophy to UAE Board After BCCI Threat

The 2025 Asia Cup final between India and Pakistan wasn’t just a game but rather a huge event, watched by over 250 million people on TV and online. India won, but what should have been a celebration turned into a controversy.

The Trophy Dispute:

Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Chairman and Asian Cricket Council (ACC) President Moshin Naqvi has handed over the tournament’s trophy to the UAE Cricket Board after the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), the richest cricket board in the world, making over $450 million a year, threatened to impeach Naqvi over his handling of the trophy presentation ceremony.

How the Controversy Started:

This controversy started when the Indian team, after defeating Pakistan in the final, refused to accept the Asia Cup trophy from Naqvi during the presentation ceremony. Some reports even said Naqvi took the trophy and medals back to his hotel. Later, the media claimed that he apologized to the BCCI, but Naqvi denied the allegations and said the Indian media was spreading “fake news.” He also said he was ready to hand over the trophy properly.

BCCI Pushes Back:

The BCCI firmly objected during an Asian Cricket Council (ACC) Annual General Meeting, demanding that the Asia Cup trophy and winners’ medals must be given to India, but Naqvi ended up causing tension during the proceedings by choosing not to address the issue directly. The BCCI threatened to impeach Naqvi from his role as ACC President, accusing him of violating ceremony rules and having a conflict of interest due to his dual roles as PCB Chairman and Pakistan’s Interior Minister.

Trophy Goes to UAE:

All this pressure finally got to Naqvi as he handed over the Asia Cup trophy to the UAE Cricket Board instead. This decision seems like a way to calm things down and comply with the BCCI’s demands without directly transferring the trophy to India. It’s still unclear when the trophy will be returned to India and how the Indian team will officially receive it.

Criticism From Both Sides:

The controversy has drawn criticism from both India and Pakistan. Former Pakistani cricketer Shahid Afridi has called on Naqvi to step down, claiming he has little cricket knowledge and pointing to the trophy controversy. Hashtags like #AsiaCupDrama are trending on social media as the experts debate whether giving the trophy to UAE was a smart move or just an illogical decision that made things more complicated. While in India, many expressed disappointments, saying refusing the trophy was against sportsmanship.

More Than Just a Trophy:

The controversy surrounding the Asia Cup trophy demonstrates the complicated connection between sports, politics, and diplomacy in international cricket. This issue is about more than a trophy. The Asia Cup is a symbol of regional pride, and Naqvi’s dual role makes many question his impartiality. How can he be fair when India and Pakistan are rivals?

While the trophy is now with the UAE Cricket Board, tensions between BCCI and PCB remain, and the management of Asian cricket continues to be a concern.
