ICC Introduces ‘Test Twenty’: A New 80-Over Cricket Format Changing the Game

ICC has launched a new format, being framed as the “fourth format,” called “Test Twenty.” This format will combine the strategic depth of Tests with the speed and excitement of T20s.

What is Test Twenty?

Some of the key features of Test Twenty include:

  • Each match will be played over 80 overs total.
  • Just like in a Test match, each side will bat twice, but each innings will be only 20 overs long.
  • So, both teams score, bat, and bowl twice—the flow is similar to that of a normal Test match, but the time commitment is much less.
  • As usual, matches can result in a win, loss, tie, or draw.

In short, it’s like a mini-Test, compressed into one day and with an 80-over structure with two innings each.

Why This Change?

Test cricket has always been admired for its depth and character, but concerns still remain regarding the losing ground among younger fans, broadcasters, and packed schedules. So, to make it easier to watch and more “TV-friendly,” ICC launched Test Twenty to create a bridge between preserving cricket’s tradition while also retaining audience.

Cricket legends like AB de Villiers, Sir Clive Lloyd, Matthew Hayden, and Harbhajan Singh are supporting this decision. They have also said things like, “It honors the traditions of the game while embracing the possibilities of the future.”

How Will It Work?

  • The first full season of Test Twenty will begin in January 2026.
  • It will feature six franchises, that is, three Indian-city teams plus three international city teams (one each from Dubai, London, and a US city).
  • The squad will include 8 Indian players and 8 overseas players, for a total of 16 players.
  • There will also be open registration for young players (13–19-year-olds) in certain feeder tournaments for youth development.

What Does It Mean for Players & Fans?

For players, it means more exposure and improvement in tactical patience and aggressive skill because the new format requires less time than a five-day test. This format is described as a “talent ecosystem,” which will allow younger players to shine.

And as for fans who find it hard to sit through a full test, this is good news for them. The tactics and innings changes of a Test but all in one day and with more action.

Challenges

  • Some question whether it will truly carry the feels of a “Test” match when each inning is only 20 overs and the entire game is 80 overs.
  • Since overs are being scheduled, cricket boards are still trying to figure out when and how to include the new “Test Twenty” format in their already busy schedules.
  • It also carries the risk of overshadowing existing formats and causing confusion because of the existence of too many formats.
  • Fans are used to the tradition of Test cricket, so they might feel the soul is being compromised.

Final Thoughts

To summarize everything, the new Test Twenty might attract more viewers and can open opportunities for young players, but it also asks us to rethink how we define a “Test match.”

So, if you are a cricket fan who enjoys quick-fire action, this format might be for you. Keep an eye out come January 2026, featuring six teams, 80 overs, and two innings each with global stars and new talent.
